CLEVELAND– Some Cleveland police officers will soon be given body cameras to use while at work.

The city police department acquired 32 body cameras, which are similar to ones that were purchased last year for the Solon police department.

Shortly after the November 29 deadly police chase, Cleveland Police Chief Michael McGrath said his department would be testing the cameras. Several city officials, as well as citizens, complained after that chase that officers didn’t have dashboard cameras in their cars.

Lt. Bruce Felton of the Solon Police Department says the body video records what’s happening in front of the officer.

The cameras in Cleveland are not on the road yet.  Officials say six cameras will be given to each district, with two to be used on each of the three shifts.

The department acquired the cameras so they can be tested before officials decide if the equipment should be purchased.
