Cory Barron’s family putting up billboards, seeking answers in his death

CLEVELAND - The family of a 22-year-old who went to a concert in downtown Cleveland five years ago and never came out alive are continuing to seek answers.

"We want to know what happened and we won't give up," said Dick Wrenn, one of the private investigators hired by the family of Cory Barron to look into the case.

The family is now working with Lamar Advertising to place six digital billboards in the downtown Cleveland area. The billboards will go up sometime in the next few days.

Wrenn said they are hoping someone who has information on Cory's death will notice the billboard and call investigators.

"We want to get answers for the family," Wrenn said.

Cory went to a concert at Progressive Field with his family July 18, 2014. His body was found several days later in a landfill.

Police say the 6’2” Barron went down a 2 ft. by 2 ft. garbage chute at Progressive Field and died.

Wrenn and his fellow IRG investigators say Barron had bruises on his head and ribs that happened prior to his death. They believe someone assaulted him and then put his body down a garbage chute.

The family is offering a reward of up to $50,000 for information that leads to the arrest and indictment of the person responsible for Barron's death.

Anyone with information is asked to call (440) 333-6602 or email info@irgglobal.com.

Not guilty verdict in Cleveland police supervisor trial

EAST CLEVELAND, Ohio--  A jury came back with a not guilty verdict Friday evening in the trial of a Cleveland police supervisor. They had to decide whether or not the Cleveland police sergeant violated the law during a 2012 police chase.

The prosecution in the case against Cleveland Police Sgt. Patricia Coleman rested Wednesday and the defense presented their side on Friday before closing arguments.

Attorney Kevin Spellacy, who represents Coleman, had asked the judge to dismiss the case stating none of the 16 witnesses the prosecution presented said Coleman did anything wrong.

East Cleveland Judge William Dawson disagreed and ruled against the dismissal.

Coleman had faced a charge of dereliction of duty in connection with the chase that ended in East Cleveland with two unarmed suspects being killed. There were nearly 100 police officers involved in the chase.

Coleman is not one of the officers who fired shots at the suspects.

Spellacy also brought up that Hemmons dismissed three of the supervisors charges after they agreed to make a $2,500 donation to the East Cleveland law enforcement trust fund.

“It’s extortion,” Spellacy said.

Hemmons declined to comment on the matter.

HURON, Ohio -- The search for a missing swimmer at Nickel Plate Beach in Huron will resume Monday morning.

According to Huron police, a 29-year-old Brittany Young, of Vermilion, was swimming at the beach Sunday and went missing.

Coast Guard officials say she was last seen by the line of buoys. There were 3 to 5 foot waves on the water and 15- 20 mph winds at the time of the incident.

Rescue operations were under way with personnel from Huron Police Department, Huron Fire, the Coast Guard and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

Huron police say the search is being suspended for the night because of deteriorating conditions and a storm possibility.  Shore beach walks and water based searches will resume Monday at daylight as long as weather conditions permit.

The Sandusky Register provided FOX 8 with a photo from the scene.

This is the second water rescue at Nickel Plate Beach in two weeks.

This is a developing story.  FOX 8 will provide more details as they become available.

Editor's Note: Officials originally told FOX 8 that the woman was with her husband and 3 kids. We have since been told there were no children involved in the incident.  Officials originally reported the woman as 23 years old, which was incorrect.  This story has been corrected to reflect her actual age.

Euclid police say woman punched, bit them during arrest after some raised concern

EUCLID, Ohio-- Euclid police officials released video of a June 26 arrest of a woman after some local ministers raised concerns over her treatment.

Police Chief Scott Meyer said he believes his officers acted properly and used "considerable restraint" when arresting Shawnte Lewis.

The ministers want to meet with the mayor to discuss the incident, and the chief said he too is willing to meet with them and show them the video.

"We have dash camera video, security video, and body camera video," Meyer said.

The chief said the officers were finishing a traffic stop when Lewis stopped her car in the middle of the road, rolled down her window and yelled at them.

"Stop being a ******* pig," the woman can be heard saying on dash camera video. When the officer asked what she meant, she repeated her statement and added, " You are harassing a kid."

The officers told her she was impeding traffic and they were going to charge her. She left and officers chased her for a short time.

"The officers called off the chase, but her vehicle was found a short time later in a parking lot," said Lt. Mitch Houser.

The woman's husband came to the scene and she eventually walked out of the building.

"No that's her," one officer can be heard saying on security video from the building.

Police said the woman then punched one officer in the face.

"She also bit one in the hand and spit at another officer," Houser said.

Lewis was indicted on several charges, including assault and failure to comply.

The chief said the officers did use a taser on the woman and physical force.

"She bit one of the officer's hands and that officer punched her to get her to quit biting him," the chief said .

Lewis is due back in court next week to face the charges.

One of the ministers involved, Pastor Aaron Phillips, tells FOX 8 he is "appalled" by the video and believes the officers were not justified in their actions.

"I am outraged," Phillips said. "They are trying to justify what they did. She had every right to voice her opinion. We are in trauma and tired of being harassed by police."

Phillips said he and the other ministers want to meet with the mayor within 10 days and would also like an outside agency to investigate the case.

CLEVELAND – A 55-year-old former Cleveland patrolman entered guilty pleas Wednesday in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court to several charges, including unlawful sexual conduct with a minor and pandering sexually oriented matter involving a minor.

Sentencing for Mario Lozada is set for next month.

He was  arrested by Garfield Heights police in November after he was found to be in a vehicle with a 15-year-old girl and a gun. He was a Cleveland patrol officer at that time.

Officials say he retired a short time after his November arrest.

A police report from November states, Lozada was pulled over on a traffic violation after an officer saw the dark-colored SUV he was driving go through Jack C. Donovan Park, which closes at dark. The vehicle was stopped a short time later for a traffic violation.

When Garfield police pulled over the vehicle, the officer noticed a firearm in the back-seat of the SUV and ordered both parties to keep their hands visible.

The 15-year-old first told police that Lozada was her step-father, who had been in a relationship with her mother for three years. Lozada also told officers he met the girl because he had been in a relationship with her mother. However, the girl’s mother was called to the scene and said she did not know him and never met him.

Garfield officers found his Cleveland police uniform shirt and badge in the rear of the vehicle.

Huron Police Chief Bob Lippert tells Fox 8 at that at 11:01 a.m. Thursday dispatchers received a 911 call from a landscaper reporting a body on the rocks of the Lake Erie shoreline in the 1100 block of By the Shores Drive.

“This is a terrible tragedy and we extend our deepest sympathies to Brittany’s family and friends,” said Lippert.

Earlier this week, her family and residents demanded changes because the drowning Sunday was the second in two weeks. They  suggested adding life guards, roping off a shallow designated swimming area, a warning flag system and real-time monitoring equipment.

Earlier this week, City Manager Andrew White said the beach would remained closed indefinitely until the problem and solutions have been thoroughly researched. They'd already begun discussing safety improvements before Sunday's tragedy.

SANDUSKY, Ohio-- Tourists hoping to have a nice weekend in Sandusky woke up Saturday morning to find their vehicles damaged.

Security video at the Baymont Inn on Cleveland Road shows the alleged suspects: two boys. One boy appears to be drawing something on the vehicles.

"Some had Xs drawn on them, another had a male body part drawn on the trunk," said Sgt. Kevin Youskievicz. "These were deep marks. It's going to cost a lot to repair."

Reports state the two may also be responsible for breaking windows at a nearby house with rocks.

SANDUSKY, Ohio-- The FOX 8 I-Team obtained Sandusky police body camera video that shows what an officer saw when police arrived at a home on Maple Avenue after a teen accidentally shot himself in the leg Saturday evening.

"Please help him," the mother can be heard saying on the body camera video.

Officer Darian Cook, one of the first on scene, saw the boy's condition and knew he had to act quickly.

"We need a tourniquet," Cook said, as he ran to his vehicle. The boy's mother applied pressure to the wound when Cook ran to his car.

When Cook couldn't find a tourniquet, he grabbed a dog leash that was in the back of his car.

"He placed that on the boy's leg to stop the bleeding until firefighters and EMS arrived," said Sgt. Kevin Youskievicz.

The boy was taken to the hospital. His mother told detectives Monday that the boy remains hospitalized but is expected to recover.

Police Chief John Orzech says he believes his officer's quick actions helped save the teenager's life.

"Without Officer Cook's quick actions this could have been very tragic," the chief said.

79-year-old woman will get a new hearing before reporting to jail for feeding stray cats

GARFIELD HEIGHTS, Ohio - The FOX 8 I-Team has learned Garfield Heights Municipal Court Judge Jennifer Weiler will have a new hearing in Nancy Segula's case.

The 79-year-old Garfield Heights woman was sentenced to 10 days in jail after ignoring multiple warnings and citations for feeding stray cats for several years.

In Garfield Heights, it is illegal to feed stray dogs and cats under ordinance 505.23.

Judge Weiler told the FOX 8 I-Team the magistrate heard Segula's case last week because she was off.

She said she will have another hearing so she can hear from all sides.

The hearing has been scheduled for 11 a.m. August 6.

The magistrate ordered her to jail for contempt of court. Garfield Heights officials said Segula was ordered several times to quit feeding the cats but continued.

Bonnie Hackett, Garfield Heights animal warden, tells FOX 8 she has tried working with Segula for four years.

"We have had numerous complaints from neighbors," Hackett said. "This started in 2015. The neighbors have called us asking for help. It becomes a health issue for neighbors. There are numerous cats. I have caught 22 cats already in that area. I am aware of 10 to 12 that are still over there now."

Hackett said the cats that were trapped were taken to a rescue, given medical care, and put up for adoption.

Amy Beichler, executive director of PAWS Ohio, says her organization is going to help take care of the issue.

Beichler said she will go to Segula's home and help trap the cats and kittens that are there now.

Beichler added she is working with Stautzenberger College, Brecksville campus, and they will provide medical care for the cats. Once the cats receive their shots and are spayed or neutered they will be put up for adoption.

Segula said she felt bad for the cats, so she fed them. She said she now wants them gone so they can possibly get adopted and get good homes.

She is hoping the judge will give her another sentence, besides jail, after the next hearing.

"The thought of going to jail scares me so bad," Segula said.

I-TEAM uncovers more gun crimes in Rocky River Reservation, same park with unsolved homicides

$

ROCKY RIVER, Ohio -- The FOX 8 I-Team uncovered two more cases of people suddenly faced with guns in the Rocky River Reservation, the same park where two people were recently found shot to death.

Cleveland Metroparks police reports show that in the latest incidents, one woman said she had been robbed at gunpoint and another woman said someone in a car flashed a gun.

This comes to light while there’s no justice yet for the murders of Kate Brown and Carnell Sledge. They were found shot and left dead in the quiet Rocky River Reservation.

Now, the I-Team uncovered more mystery in that same park.

According to reports, on July 23 a woman told investigators that two men came from behind and robbed her. One “pointed the muzzle of a pistol” to her head. She said both men wore gloves and one also wore a ski mask.

Meantime, a worker at the same park and his mother said someone pulled a gun on them on July 24.  The worker’s mother said she was driving and another driver flagged her down. She then saw a passenger holding a “silver object…believed to be a pistol…in an upright position.” She says she then sped away.

Metroparks police and an FBI Task Force followed up on the case of the woman robbed at gunpoint. At first, they called the incident “of concern” noting it “could be relevant to our open homicide case.”

But now a Metroparks spokesperson said there’s no information, at this point, to show a connection to the unsolved homicides.

We also noticed the two new cases were not reported as soon as they happened.

In one case, the victim said she was afraid to report it because of a domestic situation.

Meanwhile, the worker's mother said she did not initially report their case  because she didn’t have much of a description of the people in the car.

I-TEAM reveals how long Cleveland recycling has been going to landfills

$

CLEVELAND - The FOX 8 I-TEAM has uncovered new evidence showing how long your recycling in the City of Cleveland has ended up dumped with regular trash in a landfill.  What’s happening became a crisis hidden from taxpayers until the I-TEAM started exposing it earlier this summer. Now we can show you when the city’s recycling program first broke down.

City sanitation crews continued picking up curbside recycling this week, just like they have before.  This continued even though city officials admit and documents show that most, if not all, of the city's recycling, ends up in the landfill.

"We're spending millions of dollars allegedly on a recycling program that's not happening," Councilman Mike Polensek told the FOX 8 I-TEAM.

In June the FOX 8 I-TEAM revealed that city records show up to 95% of your recycling in Cleveland gets thrown in with the trash; this being done by city sanitation crews.

Now, through a public records request, the I-TEAM has obtained documents showing that since June 2018 very little recycling from the city has been recycled.

"Let's figure out how we fix this thing," Polensek said. "It's critical. We are spending millions of dollars allegedly on a recycling program that isn't happening."

City officials said that most of the recycling is contaminated. A sanitation supervisor told the I-TEAM if a load of recycling has any garbage mixed with it when it comes in from the street, it goes to the trash.

"I just can't believe that 90% of the recycling from Cleveland is contaminated. That just doesn't make sense," said Angelo Lisak, who owns Mel's Cafe in Tremont. "We work hard to recycle and for what?"

Mayor Frank Jackson previously told the I-TEAM that the program is not working. He says they are looking at hiring a consultant to study the problem and make changes to improve it.

The I-TEAM has asked when the consultant will be hired but we have not yet heard back. Several residents, including Lisak, say they want answers.

"I keep calling and asking," Lisak said. "No one calls back. No one cares."

"The officer was on Washington Park Boulevard when he saw the vehicle pass him at a high rate of speed," the chief told FOX 8.

The officer pulled Siggers over, but moments after the stop, he took off.

The officer chased him, but Siggers crashed on Chard Avenue. He hit a utility pole and then took off running.

"The officer did a great job," Majoy said. "He chased him and was able to deploy his taser to get him to stop."

Siggers was arrested and is facing several charges, including OVI and resisting arrest.
